Snap rings, also known as retaining rings or circlips, are small but essential mechanical components used to secure parts within a housing or onto a shaft. They are commonly employed in various machinery and automotive applications to prevent axial movement and ensure stable positioning of other components. Snap rings are typically made from spring steel or other high-strength materials, providing the necessary resilience and durability for their function. Their design involves a circular ring with a radial or tangential gap, allowing them to be compressed and then snapped into a groove or slot on a shaft or in a housing. This compression provides a tight fit, holding the ring in place and effectively preventing parts from moving out of position. There are two main types of snap rings: internal and external. Internal snap rings, or internal retaining rings, fit inside a bore or hole and are used to hold components in place within a cylindrical housing. External snap rings, or external retaining rings, fit around the outside of a shaft or other cylindrical part, securing it against axial forces. The installation of snap rings is straightforward, often requiring only a pair of snap ring pliers to compress and fit them into their designated grooves. Their removal can be accomplished in a similar manner. Snap rings are valued for their simplicity, reliability, and ease of use, making them indispensable in assemblies where space is limited and a secure fit is crucial.

Anhui Ningguo Dongbo Fastener Co., Ltd. is a Snap Rings manufacturer based in Ningguo, Anhui, China. Since 2005 we have produced retaining rings, circlips and precision stamped fasteners for automotive, construction machinery, energy, power tools and appliance assemblies. Our snap ring range covers internal and external retaining rings, heavy-duty anti-shift rings, bearing retaining rings and custom shapes, supplied as standard parts or built to drawing.
We operate a full-process production system: raw material precision rolling, mold design and production, stamping, machining, heat treatment, surface treatment, ultrasonic cleaning, automatic optical screening, performance testing and packaging. Annual capacity reaches 3.5 billion pieces, and more than 55% of our products are exported to Europe, the United States and other high-end markets, serving OEMs in over 60 countries.
Our snap ring family is organized around how the ring locates and retains a component. Internal rings fit into a bore or housing groove; external rings fit onto a shaft or bearing. Within each group we produce standard DIN and GB profiles plus application-specific designs for bearing retention, anti-shift duty and space-limited assemblies.

Each snap ring type addresses a specific retention geometry and load direction. The table below maps our main product families to typical applications and the key selection variables we work with.
| Product Family | Typical Application | Key Selection Variables |
| Internal Circlips (DIN472, M1308 JV, DIN984, M1302 JB) | Bore retention for bearings, seals, spacers in gearboxes, pumps, motors | Bore diameter, groove diameter, ring thickness, radial width, load capacity |
| External Circlips (DIN471, DIN983, M1408 AV, N1402, DIN6799, M1800) | Shaft retention for bearings, gears, pulleys, linkages | Shaft diameter, groove diameter, ring thickness, lug style, load capacity |
| Snap Rings (M2300 SB, DIN5417, M2400 SW) | Bearing fixing, anti-shift retention, heavy-duty axial location | Nominal size, groove load capacity, ring load capacity, limiting speed |
| Belleville Spring Washers (DIN2093) | High-load bolted joints, preload maintenance, vibration damping | Outer diameter, inner diameter, thickness, load-deflection curve |
| Flat Washers (DIN988) | Load distribution, surface protection, spacing | Inner diameter, outer diameter, thickness, material grade |
| Non-standard Stamping Parts | Special-shaped retaining rings, brackets, cages, upper washers | Drawing dimensions, material, surface treatment, annual volume |
We select material and finish around the working environment, load cycle and corrosion exposure. Standard production uses carbon spring steel, stainless steel, mild steel, 65Mn, C67S, C75S, 2Cr13 and 1.4122. Surface treatment options include phosphating (zinc/manganese), mechanical galvanizing, colored zinc, Dacromet, Gumet, electrophoresis, Megalide, galvanized nickel and passivation. Salt spray test requirements and color targets are confirmed per project.
Snap ring performance depends on the relationship between ring geometry and groove geometry. Our published data for each series includes nominal size, thickness, outer or inner diameter, shoulder width, weight, groove load capacity (FN), retaining ring load capacity (FR) and limiting speed where applicable. For example, our M2300 SB internal snap rings cover nominal sizes from 7 mm to 270 mm, with thickness from 0.8 mm to 4 mm and groove load capacity up to 356 kN. The DIN5417 external series covers shaft diameters from 30 mm to 400 mm with load capacities up to 1040 kN.
We produce more than 9,000 standard part numbers and over 15,000 non-standard parts. Annual output capacity is 3.5 billion pieces. Production follows DIN 471, DIN 472, DIN 983, DIN 984, DIN 5417, DIN 6799, DIN 2093, DIN 988 and GB 894-2017 as applicable. Tolerances on thickness, diameter and groove dimensions are held to the standard or to the drawing.
Standard snap rings cover most axial retention needs. When the groove is non-standard, the load path is unusual or the installation space is constrained, we develop custom rings from drawings or samples. Customization covers material grade, thickness, diameter, lug shape, bevel angle, surface treatment, salt spray requirement and packaging. We also produce special-shaped split retaining rings, internal circlips, external circlips, brackets and limit cages as stamped parts.
Our engineering team reviews the drawing or sample, confirms the critical dimensions and load requirements, and proposes a material and finish combination. Tooling is designed and produced in-house. Prototype and production samples are inspected against the agreed specification before volume release.
Dongbo is IATF16949, ISO14001 and CNAS certified. Our testing center passed CNAS accreditation in 2024 and performs material element analysis, mechanical property testing, hardness testing and metallography. We use multifunctional three-coordinate measuring machines, electron microscope analyzers and self-developed testing equipment. Inspection occurs after each process, and finished products receive full inspection according to customer requirements and international standards.
We have served as a member of the National Fastener Standardization Technical Committee and have led or participated in the formulation and revision of 13 national standards, including technical conditions for elastic retaining rings, elastic cylindrical pins and disc washers. Our retaining ring products are manufactured with high consistency in materials, dimensions, tolerances, mechanical properties and surface treatment.
Snap rings are installed with standard snap ring pliers, compressing the ring into its groove. Internal rings fit into a bore groove; external rings fit onto a shaft groove. Correct groove diameter, groove width and edge radius are essential for the ring to seat and carry load. For DIN5417 external rings, the groove should have the same rounded profile as the ring inner diameter. Removal uses the same pliers, and rings are generally replaced rather than reused after removal in critical assemblies.
We supply spare rings and replacement kits in bag, blister, masking paper, oil paper or custom box packaging. Packaging and labeling are configured to the customer's handling and traceability requirements.
